** Polonaise as a name for a dance is borrowed from the 

French. Originally it meant "slow Polish dance in triple time,

 but later in Dutch it mainly signified "dance in which people follow each other in a string of consecutive hopping/dance walk, with their hands on the shoulders of the

 previous person"  (according to Van Dale dictionary, 2005)
